Fort Frances native Steve Arpin, driving for Loenbro Motorsports, came within a hair of nabbing his first feature win of the season in the second tour stop of the Red Bull Global Rallycross season in Louisville, Ky.
He eventually settled for second place behind Sweden’s Sebastian Eriksson (Honda Red Bull Olsbergs MSE) by a mere .071 seconds.
Decked out in his new bright-yellow racing gear sponsored by JCB, Arpin stayed on Eriksson’s tail all the way to the finish line–even slightly bumping the Swede’s right rear bumper on the final corner as he tried for one last desperation pass.
But Eriksson hung on to win in a time of 5:38.230, with Arpin crossing at 5:38.301.
It was Arpin’s third podium finish in his past four races.
He won his first heat in Louisville, then placed second in the second one before having some difficulties in his third that left him last out of five cars.
But Arpin rebounded to take third in the semi-final and now has 133 points for the season.
That puts him third in the drivers’ standings behind Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross teammates Scott Speed (150) and Tanner Foust (140), and four ahead of Eriksson (129).
On deck for the racers is a doubleheader June 3-4 in Thompson, Conn.
The finals on both days will be broadcast on NBCSN live starting at 4 p.m. (CDT).
