He’s spent most of his racing season south of the border, and his opposition here at home would probably prefer that he stay there.
Fort Frances stock car driver Steve Arpin, who has been competing at a variety of Minnesota and Wisconsin racing facilities in an effort to better hone his skills, resurfaced at Emo Speedway this past Saturday and went on to win his second Borderland Racing Association Modified division feature showdown in three outings at the track this year.
Arpin, who sits 10th out of 18 drivers in the Modified standings (123 points) despite his limited appearances, won his heat and then powered to victory in the feature, with Dryden’s Kevin Randell taking second and defending division champion Gavin Paull from Fort Frances ending up third.
Dryden’s Vic Larson came in seventh in the feature, and continues to lead the standings with 316 points, 18 more than second-place Jake Kamm from Dryden (298) and third-place Randell (273).
Devlin’s Denny Trimble put it all together for his first feature victory this year in the Street Stock division to mount a serious charge on division leader and defending champion Ron Westover of Devlin.
Trimble, who finished second in his heat, took the checkered flag ahead of runner-up Jeff Wickstrom from International Falls and third-place finisher John Bosma from Emo.
The win pushed Trimble ahead of Emo’s Anthony Visser into second place in the overall standings with 310 points, just behind Westover (321).
Kenny Perry Jr. of Fort Frances bounced back from a fourth-place finish in the heat race to reach victory lane in the feature of the Mini-Sprint category.
Despite the win, Perry Jr. remains in third place in the points race with 230, trailing Kyle Ridlon of Aurora, Man. (258), whose second-place result in the feature boosted him into the overall lead, and Ken Perry, Sr. (256).
This Saturday is Organ Donor Night, with the public invited to come out and get information on organ donation from local medical personnel.
A highlight of the evening will be the Powder Puff race for women following the Modified feature event, with B-93 FM on-air personality Jen O’Reilly scheduled to be one of the drivers.
Hot laps begin at 7 p.m., with racing set to get underway at 7:30 p.m.
