When the cards were on the table, Brayton Levesque came up aces.
The Fort Frances goalie backstopped the Windigo Ice Hawks to a 5-4 victory over the Nipigon Caribou in a shootout to capture first place in the Atom division of the 28th-annual All-Native Goodwill Hockey Tournament in Thunder Bay on Sunday.
Levesque and Noah McPherson from Couchiching First Nation were part of the Ice Hawks’ roster.
McPherson played a large role of his own in the win—netting a hat trick in regulation time.
Levesque then slammed the door in overtime before turning away three of four shooters in the breakaway battle.
The Couchiching Thunderhawks also left Thunder Bay as champions after dumping the Port Arthur Giants 8-1 in the PeeWee division final.
Goal scorers were unavailable at press time for the Thunderhawks, whose roster included female players Makenna Hill, Abby Roach, and Samantha Kelly making significant contributions on the mostly male squad.
Other local players known to have taken part in the tournament included Ethan Rose, Tristan Yerxa, Anthony Bruyere, Ethan Jourdain, Kaleb Bruyere, Caleb Woods, Anthony Yerxa, Jordan Hunter, Trent Hunter, Sheldon Kelly, and Adam George.
Their specific teams were not known at press time.
