The Fort Frances Archers Club is pointing in the right direction for this weekend’s eighth-annual 3-D spring competition at the local sportsmen’s club’s property at Frog Creek.
“It’s a pretty popular event,” said co-organizer Ben Wiersema, who expects upwards of 40 archers from here, Kenora, Dryden, Thunder Bay, and International Falls to compete.
Archers will be divided into two divisions according to bow style (traditional and compound) and fire arrows at foam targets in the shape of various of big- and small-game animals—even an alligator model which came in this week.
Registration starts at 10 a.m., with the entry fee being $10 for adults and $5 for children under 16. A kids’ shooting range also will be set up along with a lunchtime barbecue.
This is the first of two 3-D tournaments the club will host this summer in addition to their regular practice meetings twice a week. The second one will be held in late-August.
Meanwhile, the sportsmen’s club also is organizing its annual “Kids for Fishing” day trip tomorrow.
Kids aged eight to 15 still can register at the Frog Creek site starting at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. But parents should call Catherine McGuire at 274-4007 tonight for registration status as there were only 12 spots available as of today.
There is no registration fee, but youngsters must bring their own fishing rod and lifejacket. Tackle is donated by Paroma Tackle while minnows are provided by Witherspoon’s One Stop.
The trip is sponsored by the club, Safeway’s volunteer employees, and the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship duo of Harry Bell and John Maffei in memoriam of Daniel Nault.
