Though Aquanaut head coach Roman Ramirez has the provincial and national rankings for his swimmers, he prefers not to share them.
Ramirez feels the emphasis should be on the team and its accomplishments over the season rather than on individual rankings that might not mean very much—and most likely will change rapidly.
“It doesn’t mean very much to me,” he said.
What means more to Ramirez is watching the swimmers improve practice by practice; meet by meet.
The rankings, in fact, don’t seem to matter much to any members of the Aquanauts.
“It’s a nice measure for the kids,” said club president John Dutton. “[But] there’s only certain teams that submit. There are probably hundreds of teams that don’t submit.”
Still, Dutton sees all the Aquanaut swimmers as success stories. “For those kids to be swimming at that age, they’re fairly exceptional anyway,” he remarked.
The Aquanauts have two meets left this season, including one in Minneapolis this weekend. Then they’ll be in Winnipeg on July 1-4 for the annual Man.-Sask. showdown.
The team then will take a short break before hitting the pool again for swim camps in August.
