Aquanauts fare well in Winnipeg

Twenty-two swimmers from the Fort Frances Aquanauts competed at the MM Crocus Classic in Winnipeg last weekend.
The locals, including eight competing for the first time in a 50m pool, did well, said Aquanauts coach Roman Ramirez.
“They did really well, the meet was not easy,” he said. “I’m really happy. It was a great, great meet for us.”
The Aquanauts—swimming against 27 other teams—placed seventh overall in points for the meet, including 10 medals.
Rachel Dutton shaved 16 seconds off her time in the 400m I.M. and also won a silver medal in the female 13-14 200m freestyle event after a day with three fourth-place finishes.
“Some swimmers were fighting for the medals, especially Rachel,” said Ramirez. “Everyone did a good job. They improved their times, that’s the most important thing.”
Ten-year-old Jessica Lowey placed fifth in the female 12 and under 400m freestyle, taking 40.52 seconds off her previous time. Nicole Lowey knocked 14.37 seconds off her 200m breaststroke.
Donovan Cousineau shaved 23.20 seconds off his previous best in the 100m butterfly, Rebecca Armit knocked 19.97 seconds off her 100m freestyle time, and Nicole Fontana improved her 50m breaststroke by 15.66 seconds.
Karli McKinnon brought home two second-place medals in her age division—one in the 200m I.M. and the other in the 400m IM. She also had three fourth-place and two fifth-place finishes.
Heather Dutton finished second in the female 17 and over 200m butterfly and fifth in the 400m freestyle, the 400m I.M., and the 200 I.M.
Thirteen-year-old Tahsha Schabler garnered two bronze medals on the weekend—one in the 100m backstroke and the other in the 50m backstroke.
The Aquanauts next will compete in Thunder Bay at the end of the month.
