‘Anniversary’ tournament growing in popularity

What started out as a one-time event is fast becoming a favourite among district golfers.
The second “anniversary” tournament attracted an overflowing field last Thursday afternoon at Kitchen Creek—and odds are next year’s event will draw even more interest.
“Last year, the original intent was to celebrate the 75th anniversary [of the club],” said Kitchen Creek pro Steve Wood. “But it’s worked out well. We got 134 entries and everyone enjoyed it.”
Teams were drawn up according to handicaps, thus making for a lot of first-time groupings.
Under the scoring system, teams took their top two finishes at each hole, with a bogey worth one point, a par worth two, a birdie worth three, an eagle worth four, and a double-eagle worth five.
“It’s great they got this much people out for this. I booked my whole week off for this,” said Larry Dolk. “I like the idea of playing with people you’ve haven’t before.”
“It’s a nice tournament. Fairly competitive, but a lot of fun,” echoed Tom Foley, who teamed up with Paul Morrison and Tony Penkoff to capture the overall points title with 106 and claim the top prize of a digital camera each.
“It worked out well for us,” added Foley.
In second place just one ahead back was the foursome of Jim Ballard, Doug Currie, Blake Bruyere, and Bob Armit.
Colin Weilinga, Rick Payne, and Penny McComb were third with 104 points, followed by the two teams also at 104—Mike Sinclair, Steve Kosowick, Conley Thayer, and Barb Asplund as well as Mel Larson, Shawn O’Donnell, Fred Sinninghe, and Dave Hyatt.
Rounding out the top 10 were Dave Bruyere, Gary Angus, Jack Kendall, and Laura Bruyere (103), Greg Ward, Willie Cole, Clyde Ditmars, and Jamie Nastiuk (102), Sean Taggart, Brad Gushulak, Jean Dick, and Megan Ross (102), Tom Bennett, Pete Badiuk, Brian O’Connor, and Randy Wilde (101), and Brian Beers, Doug Baird, Sam Harnett, and Fran O’Connell (101).
