The Fort Frances Angels certainly weren’t in a loving mood on Monday night.
The Angels used a four-run third inning to cruise to a 9-3 win over the Dawson Tigers in Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League action at the St. Francis Sports Field.
After Angels’ ace Rylee Redford struck out the side in the top half, her squad responded in the bottom of the first by stringing together back-to-back two-out singles off Tigers’ starter Cass Teeple to open the scoring.
Dawson (0-5) threatened to score in the top of the third, but Redford was able to sandwich a trio of strikeouts around a pair of one-out walks to keep the Tigers’ offence at bay.
The Angels (3-1-1) then erupted four runs in the bottom half to put the game out of reach for the winless Tigers.
Things unravelled for the Tigers as the Angels used a pair of singles, two walks, three passed balls, and took advantage of a throwing error to plate four runs in the frame to up the lead to 5-0.
Laurie Fairfield smoked a leadoff homer to left field to trim it to 5-1 in the fourth but the Angels responded with two runs of their own to make it a six-run deficit.
Redford cranked a homer in the later going to round out the Angels offence while the Angels only surrendered two runs the rest of the way to preserve their third win of the season.
Redford nabbed the pitching win while Teeple was saddled with the loss for Dawson.
In other games Monday night, the Fort Frances Her-icanes remained unbeaten this season with a 10-2 drubbing of the Northwest Bay Beavers.
Mariah Leahy earned the win for the Her-icanes (4-0) while Darcy Smith was tagged with the loss for Northwest Bay (1-3)
The Renegades improved their record to 4-1 with a narrow 7-5 win over the Fort Frances Mud Dogs.
Karma Andy homered for the Renegades while Mykenzie Borger garnered the win.
Cassie Meyers suffered the loss for the Mud Dogs (1-3-1).
And the Couchiching Raiders improved to a league-best 5-0 with a 38-3 blowout of the winless Manitou T-Birdies.
Grace Bragg nabbed the win while Angel Medicine suffered the loss for Manitou (0-5).
The Sabaskong Tebinaak (1-3) at Red Gut Babes (0-1-2) score was unavailable as of press time. The Big Grassy Lynx (4-1) had the bye.
Tonight’s games (weather permitting) will see the Renegades host the Babes in Barwick, the Angels will head to Northwest Bay to take on the Beavers, Big Grassy will battle the Tebinaak, Dawson will welcome Manitou, and the Her-icanes will square off against the Raiders.
The Mud Dogs have the bye.
In Rainy River District Fastball League action last Thursday night, meanwhile, there were only two make-up games played for ones that were rained out back on May 23.
Faron Morrisseau homered to pace the Couchiching Raiders (3-2) to a 17-3 rout of the Manitou Thunderbirds.
Kevin Copenace and Charlie Debungee went yard in a losing cause for the Thunderbirds (1-4).
Sheldon Kelly Sr. garnered the win over Copenace.
The Stratton Eagles (1-4) earned their first win of the season as they doubled the Rainy River Royals 4-2.
Guy Arpin nabbed the win while Myron Armstrong was tagged with the loss. Aidan Tom also homered in a losing cause for the Royals (4-1).
The Fort Frances Braves (4-0) at Northwest Bay Chieftains (0-4) game that was rained out on May 23 still needs to be made up.
League play resumes tomorrow night (weather permitting), which will see the first batch of interleague games for the season.
The Sight & Sound Wolves (3-2) play host to the Sabaskong Lakers (2-3), the Cheiftains will travel to Rainy River to take on the Royals, the Eagles will battle Windey’s Warriors (3-2), the Sabaskong Goldeneyes (1-4) will square off against the Braves, the Dawson Tigers (4-1) head to Manitou Rapids to take on the Thunderbirds, and the Raiders will lock horns with the Barwick Blue Knights (3-2).
