Local squash player Ben Andrusco captured the men’s ‘D’ event at the 1999 Carpet Max Manitoba Open Squash Classic in Winnipeg, sweeping Scott McDonald (Winnipeg) 3-0 in the final.
Andrusco reached the final after edging Andrew Town, considered the top under-12 junior player in Winnipeg by a 3-2 count. He earlier swept his best-of-five matches against Tony Viveros (Kenora) and John Steel (Winnipeg).
Meanwhile, Bob Tkachuk lost a tough 3-2 battle in the semi-finals of the ‘C’ event to Gary Bergal (Winnipeg). He earlier had won 3-1 decisions over Blair Geisel (Portage La Prairie) and Rob Aitken (Kenora).
Jason Kabel reached the semi-finals of the ‘E’ event but was bounced from further contention with a 3-0 loss to Stephen Boychuk (Winnipeg).
Kabel opened the tournament by sweeping Charles Evancio and Matthew Kroeker, both of Winnipeg.
Dustin Faragher of here lost in the consolation quarter-final of the ‘E’ event to Cameron Chapman (Red Lake) by a 3-1 score. He had opened with a 3-0 loss to Ryan Penner (Brandon) before rebounding with a tight 3-2 win over Evancio.
John Hazel also competed in the ‘E’ event, winning his first game 3-0 over Chapman but then being swept 3-0 by Penner.
In ‘C’ event action, Mark Faragher opened with a 3-1 win over George Penner (Brandon) before being eliminated with a 3-0 loss to Kevin Walkoski (Kenora).
And Al Christiansen lost both his games in the ‘D’ event, falling 3-2 to Paddy Winter (Kenora) and then 3-1 to Dave Lowery (Winnipeg).
Next up for the local squashers, men and women, is the annual La Place Rendez-Vous tournament here Feb. 19-21.
