The AA Developmental hockey camp teaches the participants not only the basics of hockey but also team work. And that is what is making it such a success.
“Camp is doing great–we have had a really good response this year,” said Mike Allison yesterday morning after meeting with his students for “coaches corner.” “We have a great staff and facilities to work in . . . they are first class and enjoyable to work in.
“The kids improve from one year to the next, and it is fun for me when I see kids improve. It’s not what I have done –but what they have done over the year,” he addd.
The camp, which began last week and will run until the end of next week, offers different types of programs for participants of all ages.
“Some of the programs sold out,” enthused Allison. “That is a positive sign that some of them, like the Atom and Bantam sold out. The Tom Thumb and PeeWee were almost full,” he explained.
Unfortunately, added Allison, the girls hockey program has not had the success the other programs have.
“We have enough registrants to hold one on-ice session. We would love to run two programs,” he stressed.
But Allison admitted that, for its first year, there has been a good response to the girls portion of the hockey school so far.
“We will try to build on it, and the areas, where more and more women are going to start to play hockey,” he added.
Allison also noted that there are still some aspects of the camp that need to be worked out. “For next year, we will have to work some kinks out of the goal-tending camp,” said Allison.
