99’ers win tourney on home ice

Press Release

The annual “Brockies’ Blizzard” Atom ‘AA’ hockey tournament was over the weekend at the Memorial Sports Centre, with seven teams from Northwestern Ontario and northern Minnesota taking part in the three days of action.
But the local Brockie’s 99’ers once again stole the show, claiming gold for the third-straight year with a fast-paced 4-1 win over the Westfort Rangers on Sunday.
The 99’ers opened the tournament with a 4-4 tie against the Kenora Thistles on Friday, then they blanked the Westfort Rangers 5-0 win later in the day.
“The 99er’s have really came together as a team and you could see that in this game,” said Catherine McGuire, one of the team’s representatives.
“They have worked very hard together both in practices and in games,” she added. “This weekend their perseverance paid off.”
A very early Saturday morning game had the 99’ers nip the Neebing Hawks 4-3. If you were not awake before the game, you were after this one as it was a well-played, close game and the 99’ers mounted a comeback to win.
Their mid-day game featured another win—a 8-2 victory over Lake of the Woods which set the stage for Sunday’s finale.
“All players gave 100 percent over the weekend and we are very proud of the team,” McGuire said.
