The Fort Frances Atom ‘AA’ DPMG.com 99ers hockey team headed to Kenora for a tournament last weekend, returning with a silver-medal finish.
The 99ers opened the round-robin portion of the tournament against St. Boniface (Winnipeg) on Friday and won 7-2. They then lost 7-2 to Dryden in their second game.
But the squad turned everything around on Saturday by winning three-consecutive games.
After dumping Baudette 10-1, the 99ers bombed Red Lake 15-0 before edging host Kenora 2-1.
Because the 99ers finished in second place after the round-robin, they earned a berth in Sunday’s final against first-place Dryden.
Unlike their meeting in the round-robin, this time around the game was a hard-fought battle that went right down to the final minutes.
With Dryden up 2-1, the 99ers pulling their goalie in hopes of knotting the game but time ran out—giving the team its first ‘A’-side consolation medals.
