3-on-3 spring hockey league planned here

A new 3-on-3 spring hockey league is set to start here March 17.
The brain child of local minor hockey coaches Brent Tookenay and Scott Clendenning, along with Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association vice-president and coach Milt Strachan, the league will involve boys and girls from all minor hockey age groups.
The plan is to run a three-week session, beginning on Monday, March 17 and ending on Friday, April 4.
Each division (IP2, Atom, PeeWee, Bantam, and Midget) will be comprised of four teams, with nine skaters and a goalie on each squad.
Players sign up individually at the Memorial Sports Centre, with organizers then drafting the teams once registration has been completed.
The goal of the program is to enable that “pond hockey” creativity while also encouraging participants to play a high-tempo game with lots of puck movement and aggressive skating.
No body checking will be allowed, and penalty shots will taken as opposed to penalties served, so participating goalies will see plenty of action all game long.
Other creative rules will be implemented to minimize stoppages in play.
The entry fee is $35 per player (based on all divisions being filled), with registrations will be taken on Monday, March 3 and Tuesday March 4 beginning at 6 a.m. at the Sportsplex.
Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, with organizers hoping for a full complement of 36 skaters and four goalie for each of the five divisions.
