Youth centre hosting summer carnival

The Urban Multi-purpose Aboriginal Youth Centre (UMAYC) is holding its first-annual summer carnival for youth of all ages here Saturday.
The carnival–being held at the drop-in centre at the corner of First Street East and Mowat Avenue–will kick off with a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m.
Then, staff and youth have organized games, displays, and entertainment to last until 9 p.m.
“During the day, there’s a whole bunch of different activities,” noted youth worker Chyanne Tynan. “There’s a dunk tank, relay races, piñatas, balloon-shaving, the pool table will be open, and there will be displays by the L’il Eagles [youth group].”
The UMAYC–a branch of the United Native Friendship Centre which opened its doors earlier this year to provide a drug- and alcohol-free environment for youth–is hosting the carnival as a promotional event.
“Basically, it’s a fundraiser and also to get more recognition for the youth centre,” said Tynan. “It’s for everybody. It’s open to youth but also little kids are welcome.
“There’s stuff for parents to do like the pancake breakfast and the displays to [check out],” she added. “I think it will be an excellent way for kids to get out and have productive fun and meet new people.”
