Despite rumours swirling around town, Administration and Finance manager Darryl Allan is assuring the town’s computer system has not crashed entirely.
Allan, who also was the local “Y2K” co-ordinator, admitted yesterday the town has been running into problems with program conversions due to the so-called millennium bug, which has delayed the issue of a set of utility bills.
But none of the personal information on any of the town’s residents has been lost, he stressed.
“All the data on the system is fine and safe,” he assured. “If you want to find out the balance on your utility bills and that sort of thing, the data is safe.
“And if you came to make a payment on a utility bill, or you made a payment last week and you want to check the balance, you will see that payment has been made and the balance is correct,” he added.
Because the town uses a fairly complex cross-application system, if one of the programs has a “Y2K” problem, it could affect all the others.
Half a dozen software technicians currently are working on removing all of the glitches, Allan said.
“At month’s end, there may be problems, too,” he noted. “But it’s all proceeding. All the data we’ve seen as the systems have come back up have been correct and fine.”
