World record walk planned

“We were made to walk and for 99 percent of human existence, that’s how we moved, by walking. Walking is healthy for the heart, the mind, and the soul.”

On Wednesday, Oct. 3, Ontario will be trying to set a new Guinness World Record for the most walkers at any given point in time, and local organizers want area residents to help achieve that goal.
In a report to council Monday night, Coun. Rick Wiedenhoeft said he, physical education director Megan Ross, and Siobhan Booth of the Northwestern Health Unit are working together to get as many people involved in what is known provincially as the “World Record Walk.”
“Schools will be involved. We hope the Fort Frances community will get behind us,” he noted.
Coun. Wiedenhoeft encouraged everyone to come out the to Sorting Gap Marina at 11:25 a.m. on Oct. 3. The walk has to take place as 11:30 a.m. to be in conjunction with walkers elsewhere in the province.
“We’ll walk to Rainy Lake Sports and Tackle and back to the marina,” he noted. “Hopefully, right across Ontario we are going to break the world record for the most walkers at any one given point in time.
“So look forward to that.”
The current record is 100,915 walkers walking at a given point in time. This is held by Western Australia, who set it last September.
The World Record Walk is being organized provincially by Green Communities Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Health.
The purpose of the walk is to promote healthy activity as well as pollution-free means of locomotion.
