While there’s no doubt volunteers are the backbone of service clubs and other non-profit organizations, keeping those volunteers eager and active can be a whole different matter.
How do you attract new volunteers? What can you do to keep them? How should you recognize them? These questions—and others— will be answered tomorrow when the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau, in conjunction with Volunteer Thunder Bay!, hosts a free workshop from 1-4 p.m. (located in the old CN station).
“Retaining volunteers is one of the big things that groups face,” said Vanessa Hebert, executive director of the Fort Frances Volunteer Bureau.
“For example, a volunteer comes to you and agrees to help out,” she noted. “But then, they don’t like the job they were given and they decide they don’t want to volunteer anymore.
“Give them a job they like, and they’ll want to do it again and again. It’s things like this you can learn at this workshop,” she added.
Unfortunately, Hebert said registration has been mediocre, yielding only eight registrants so far.
But she noted although the workshop is tomorrow afternoon, reps from local service clubs and other non-profit organizations still are more than welcome to attend.
Those interested can confirm their attendance by calling 274- 9555 before tomorrow afternoon.
The volunteer bureau doesn’t open until 10 a.m. tomorrow, but you can leave a message saying you wish to attend.
