Over the weekend, about 30 Unifor members at ParaMed Home Health Care in Dryden, Ear Falls, and Red Lake voted 100 percent in favour of taking strike action to achieve a new collective agreement.
ParaMed Home Health Care is a private, for-profit company that provides health and home support services across the region.
“The last agreement expired in June, and we met with Local 324-10 members over the weekend to update them on the breakdown of conciliated talks and the likely filing of ‘bargaining in bad faith’ charges against ParaMed,” said Unifor national representative Stephen Boon.
“Home personal support workers perform a crucial health care role across the region, but unfortunately they remain some of the lowest-paid health-care professionals in the province,” he noted.
“We, of course, hope a fair deal can be salvaged in mediated talks later this month, but our members in Dryden, Ear Falls, and Red Lake will be preparing for potential strike action by the first week of March,” Boon added.
Unifor represents more than 310,000 members across Canada in 20 economic sectors, and roughly 8000 members across Northwestern Ontario.
