The local Business Women’s Network has decided to postpone indefinitely a trade show planned next month which aimed to give women in business a chance to promote their talents, products, and services this fall.
Bev Sisco, chairperson of the “Women’s Expo” committee, said last week that the numbers just weren’t there to warrant such an event—and to go ahead with relatively few registrants would be cost prohibitive.
“If we would have had 20 people, we would have done it,” she noted. “But we realized Sept. 1, which was the deadline to register, that we just didn’t have enough.
“We had a meeting a few days later, and still, there was nobody saying, ‘Sorry, I’m a little late, but can I still sign up?’
“We needed to know well ahead of the event [which was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 18] how many people we had, so we could start getting the door prizes, the decorations, and everything else,” Sisco added.
She noted a handful of cancellations left organizers with only about a half-dozen participants, which wouldn’t even have covered the rental of the auditorium at the Memorial Sports Centre.
As to why the interest wasn’t as high as hoped, Sisco noted it’s a busy time of the year.
But she added she’d like to see the BWN take another shot at the trade show, which would have been the first of its kind the group has organized here, and may very well try to get it going later this winter.
