Witherspoon named ‘Smart Growth’ chair

Mayor Glenn Witherspoon has been appointed chair of the Northwestern zone “Smart Growth” panel, Municipal Affairs and Housing minister Chris Hodgson announced today.
“I welcome this government’s leadership and effort to work collaboratively on issues unique to the north,” said Mayor Witherspoon.
“I’m also looking forward to working with this team, who will contribute expert knowledge, diverse perspectives, and practical know-how on how we can understand demographic shifts and expand on opportunities that will ensure quality jobs and opportunities for our young people,” he added.
“Five panels across the province will play a key role in helping this government achieve its ‘Smart Growth’ vision of building a sustainable future based on a strong economy, strong communities, and a healthy environment,” said Hodgson.
“Their mandate is to provide the province with strategic advice on growth issues relevant to their zones,” he noted.
“They will also serve as a forum for co-operation on issues that cross municipal boundaries, and help identify strategies on how the province and communities should grow over the next 15 to 30 years,” he added.
The Northwestern zone will have as its priority the major issue of creating jobs and more opportunities for youth. The zone includes the districts of Thunder Bay, Kenora, and Rainy River.
The five “Smart Growth” panels will have representatives drawn from all sectors involved.
Hodgson will be announcing the membership for the three remaining “Smart Growth” panels (Northeastern, Western, and Eastern) shortly.
Panels in all five zones are expected to start work within the next few weeks.
