The winners of the raffle in support of the Kiwanis skatepark project were drawn yesterday afternoon at Safeway here.
Carmen Godin was the firstplace winner, with the windfall of $5,200 ($100 a week for a year) in Safeway gift certificates.
The two second-place winners of $1,000 in gift certificates were Charlotte Berg and Cis Barron.
And Pam Munn, Chris Mounk, and Shirley and Byron Stuart each will receive $500 in gift certificates as the third-place winners.
The tickets, of which 4,000 were printed, first went on sale in February.
Safeway assistant manager Cory Delbridge said yesterday the total number of tickets sold had not been calculated yet, so the amount of money raised isn’t known at present.
Kiwanis president Mark Jones said he believes about half of the tickets were sold.
“It wasn’t quite the success we’d hoped, but that’s a bump in the road,” he noted. “I know we have the community behind us.”^Jones added a second yet-tobe- determined raffle or some other fundraising event will be organized for this summer.
Local Safeway employees adopted the proposed skatepark as its charity for 2003, with proceeds from the raffles, a “top up” day, and barbecues going to the project.
In related news, several other local businesses have been showing their support for the proposed skatepark, including the Northern Do-it center and Badiuk Equip-ment.
Both of these held fundraiser barbecues in conjunction with their respective home and boat shows last week.
D&A Construction plans to do the same thing at an open house in the near future, said Jones.
