Due to a scheduling conflict, the youth choir being organized to perform during the World Health Organization conference here in May will meet Monday at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, not Tuesday as was previously announced.
“I’m still looking for more people. We have between 40-45 signed up, but I always want more,” organizer Diane Maxey noted Monday morning, adding her efforts to promote the choir in district elementary schools have proved fruitful.
The choir—open to youth aged eight to their teens—likely will perform at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 11th-annual Conference on Safe Communities here May-6-9, which will attract hundreds of delegates from around the world.
Maxey said the song selection process is underway.
“We’ll sing a variety of songs fit for the international nature of the conference—songs of peace and unity, songs about getting along,” she noted.
Another meeting is slated April 2. “If they can’t come out tonight, they can still get involved by coming to the April 2 meeting,” said Maxey.
In related news, Maxey also is organizing adult Community Choraliers to perform during the conference, with a first rehearsal slated April 1 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church.
She noted there’s already been some interest expressed about an adult choir, but added anyone interested is welcome to lend their “golden throats.”
“It doesn’t have to be the same people who’ve come out before,” said Maxey, referring to the previous groups of singers who performed at Christmas and Easter in previous years.
Like the youth choir, the choraliers will perform songs of peace and unity at the conference. And also like the youth choir, singers from across the district as well as International Falls are welcome to participate.
Maxey noted there won’t be an Easter cantata this year due to her being so busy with the WHO choirs.
