Comrade Glen Westover of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal from MP John Rafferty on Friday.
The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 put in a citation for Westover to receive a Jubilee medal.
In the citation, they noted that Westover has been an active member since he first joined in 1952 as a club member. His volunteer work between 1952 and 1956 led the branch to make him an honorary member in 1956.
In 1973, he was accepted by the branch as an associate voting member and in 1996. he became a life member.
To this day, he continues his volunteer work in the areas of fundraising, Legion sports and parades. Not a day goes by that he isn’t in the branch helping out where needed.
Since being awarded with the MSM in 1998 and the Palm Leaf in 2007, Westover has continued to perform tasks around the branch as well as sitting on the executive.
Over the years, he has held quite a few executive chairman positions, and currently is second vice-president, service officer, and until recently, acting sergeant-at-arms.
Westover also continues to assist the Colour Party, and is the Legion’s liaison officer for the local air cadet troop.
Westover also gas been an active Oddfellows member for 60 years, has delivered “Meals of Wheels,” and is a life member of the Rainycrest Auxiliary.
He was a volunteer firefighter for 17 years and sat on the local credit union board of officers for 39 years.
Westover has been involved with his church over the last 47 years, and has been a volunteer for humanitarian services, which involves collecting and distributing medical assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, walkers and hospital beds.
Westover received the medal from local MP John Rafferty at a ceremony Friday in front of a packed house at the local Legion, where people had gathered for the monthly Legion Ladies supper.
Also up on stage for the presentation were fellow Legion representatives Bob Bagacki, Bob Boland, and Jennifer Soderholm, Terry Randall of the International Falls’ VFW, and local MPP Sarah Campbell.
