Waterfront signs promote fitness

On any given day, you can see people walking, running, or jogging from one end of the waterfront to the other.
But letting people know they’re exercising up to 2.8 km a day is a message the Fort Frances Heart Health Coalition wants to make clear with signs erected last Friday.
“We want to promote physical activity, and get people to be ‘heart healthy,’” said Laurie Ball, local facilitator for the group.
A co-operative effort between the coalition (which purchased the signs) and the town (which provided the installation, mountings, and posts), three signs now designate the distance from the corner where Victoria Avenue turns into Front Street to the tracks before Pither’s Point.
“We have a main sign at the Sorting Gap that says 1.4 km and has arrows pointing east and west. Then, there’s two smaller ones [at each end] marking 2.8 km in either direction,” noted Ball.
“Our impression was that people are already utilizing the walkway,” she said. “This is just a way to remind them just what the distance is when they get a good daily dose of exercise.
“And it’s a way to add to the waterfront, which is always developing, always getting more big and beautiful,” she enthused.
