Press Release
Leading water quality and fisheries scientists from the U.S. and Canada will present results of their research at the eighth International Lake of the Woods Water Quality Forum slated for March 9-10 at Rainy River Community College over in International Falls.
About 90 scientists and natural resource managers from the U.S. and Canada will attend this international event, which is the primary scientific conference for researchers and resource managers studying the water quality and fisheries of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River watershed.
This year’s conference themes are Nutrients and Water Quality and Algae and Remote Sensing.
There also will be a special session on the state of the fisheries, led by Dr. John Gunn and Dr. Don Pereira.
Dr. Gunn is Canada Research Chair in Stressed Aquatic Systems at Laurentian University in Sudbury while Dr. Pereira is Fisheries Research and Policy Manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Dr. Robert Sandford, Chair, Canadian Partnership Initiative, United Nations “Water for Life” Decade, will be the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation’s guest speaker at the reception for scientists on the evening of March 9.
Also at the reception, the Foundation will present the “Larry Kallemeyn Award,” which recognizes outstanding professional achievement and contribution to scientific research or resource management in the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River basins.
The forum program also includes a focus session with the International Lake of the Woods and Rainy River Watershed Task Force.
The task force was established by the International Joint Commission last year after the governments of Canada and the United States asked the IJC to develop recommendations for bi-national management of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River watershed.
The International Lake of the Woods Water Quality Forum primarily is intended for researchers and resource managers. However, members of the public interested in the water quality of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River basins are welcome to attend.
