Leading water quality and climate scientists from the United States and Canada will present results of their research at the ninth International Lake of the Woods Water Quality Forum running today and tomorrow (March 7-8) at Rainy River Community College in International Falls.
About 85 scientists and natural resource managers from the U.S. and Canada will attend this international event, which is the primary scientific conference for those studying the water quality, fisheries, and hydrology of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River watershed.
This year’s conference themes are “Nutrients and Algae,” “Hydrology,” and “Water Quality Modelling,” along with a special session on climate change impacts on the Lake of the Woods watershed, led by Dr. David Pearson and Dr. Mark Seeley.
Dr. Pearson is a Laurentian University professor, well-known science broadcaster on CBC Radio and TV, and co-chaired the Ontario government’s 2009 Expert Panel on Climate Change Adaptation.
Dr. Seeley is a University of Minnesota climatologist, noted science broadcaster on Minnesota Public Radio, and an NOAA Partner working with the U.S. National Weather Service’s climate prediction center.
Lana Pollack, chair (U.S. Section) of the International Joint Commission between Canada and the U.S., will be the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation’s guest speaker today (March 7).
She will discuss the implications of the IJC’s report to the governments of the Unites States and Canada on bi-national water management of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River watershed.
The IJC has proposed a new watershed-based governance model.
The Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation also will present the “Larry Kallemeyn Award” today, which recognizes outstanding professional achievement and contribution to scientific research or resource management in the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River basin.
The International Lake of the Woods Water Quality Forum is primarily intended for researchers and resource managers. However, members of the public interested in the water quality of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy River basin are welcome to attend.
