Residents with hazardous waste to dispose of should mark Saturday, Sept. 12 on their calender since council has agreed to that date for the annual Household Hazardous Waste Day.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on that day, residents will be able to drop off their household hazardous waste at the designated collection point—the parking lot across from the town’s Public Works yard at 900 Wright Avenue.
“If you have any of this stuff kicking around your house that you’re not going to use, bring ’er on down. We’ll get rid of it in the proper way,” said Coun. Paul Ryan at Monday evening’s council meeting
He also listed off the number of items that would be accepted, such as: paint, dry cell batteries, lithium ion batteries, light fuel and petroleum distillates, oily water and glycol, waste oil, oil filters, waste propane, mercury, car batteries, aerosol cans, pesticides, acids, waste flammable liquids, etc.
Council approved the tender with Potter Environmental of Thunder Bay at Monday’s meeting, designating the business as the town’s 2009 municipal special or hazardous waste service provider at a cost of $10,504.74
“Tender 09-OF-11 was offered in conjunction with other communities, that being Kenora, Dryden and Red Lake in order to reduce costs,” noted Coun. Ryan.
“Depending on how much waste is collected, some of the costs are reimbursable under the Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste Management Shared Responsibility Agreement with Stewardship Ontario,” he explained. “Based on our 2008 information, it is estimated that the town’s total cost will be at or below $3,000—which will be a substantially lower amount than in 2008.”
