Walker students touting clean-up

Students involved in the environmental club at J.W. Walker School here are putting out a call for all community members and businesses in town to participate in the annual Earth Day clean-up next Tuesday (April 22).
“It’s important to clean up the Earth and we want everyone in Fort Frances to help,” one student remarked.
Although the students have participated in the Earth Day clean-up for many years, it is the first time they’d like to make the event a community effort.
Typically, the J.W. Walker students have cleaned around the school yard, the soccer fields, the baseball diamonds, Fort Frances High School grounds, Confederation College, and behind the fast food restaurants on the north side of King’s Highway.
“We collected a lot of garbage last year,” one student noted, adding they also recycled any items that could be.
But this year they’d like all of the town to be cleaned up—and they need help. So they are asking community members to tidy their neighbourhoods and businesses to clean around their lots.
Those willing to clean an area are requested to notify J.W. Walker’s environmental club, which will keep track of the Earth Day clean-up on a large map.
“We’ll mark in each section that is being cleaned with a green highlighter,” explained environmental teacher Angela Petsnick. “Then we’ll be able to see how much of the town is being cleaned.”
“Anyone can help put—kids, parents, or grandparents,” one of the students stressed.
Petsnick noted they don’t have to clean up the area during the day. They could do it in the evening or even on the weekend—as long as it gets done.
“The town is dirty and we need to clean it up. Garbage can hurt us,” another student warned.
