Walker getting kudos for recycling

Since students use many paper products daily that can be recycled along with plastic bottles and aluminum cans, staff and students of J.W. Walker School here have pledged to be “friends of the Earth” through recycling, composting, and taking action against pollution.
Tonight, the Rainy River District School Board will recognize this program with its monthly Recognition of Excellence award.
The report to the board noted over the last three years, Walker students and staff have been working towards creating a greener school by educating students and staff in environmentally-conscious pursuits.
They also have provided opportunities to become friends of the Earth.
Under the leadership of Grade 2/3 teacher Angela Petsnick, the school implemented a composting and recycling program. She placed a compost container in every classroom and blue boxes for plastic and aluminum items.
All compost material is collected daily and put into a compost bin, to be later used in the school’s flower garden.
Plastic bottles and tin cans are put out for pick-up while paper products are placed in a large bin.
Through these initiatives, the school has reduced the amount of waste going into the local landfill by about 25 percent.
Also at tonight’s meeting, which gets underway at 7 p.m. in the board office at Robert Moore School, the board will:
•hold elections for the position of chair, vice-chair, and the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association representative;
•hear a presentation on the “Reading Recovery” program;
•hear a report from the Special Education Advisory Committee;
•vote on approving several policies for stakeholder consultation; and
•receive a personnel report updated to December, 2007.
