The extensive construction going on at J.W. Walker School is proceeding on schedule and should be complete on time, the new superintendent of plant operations and maintenance for the Rainy River District School Board said at last night’s meeting.
Raymond Roy, formerly the superintendent of works (operations) for the Town of Fort Frances, made his first report to the board last night on the ongoing construction at the west-end school.
“Work at the site is progressing quiet well,” he noted.
In the old portion of the building, drywalling has been completed upstairs and will begin downstairs next week.
In the new section, which will house a gymnasium, library, and offices, workers will begin installing windows and insulation by the end of the month.
Roy said he noted a number of “critical tasks” that must be complete in order for the project to finish on time.
“I’m satisfied that all of the tasks are on schedule. We should be able to meet our target date of June 15,” he remarked.
Roy took over the position of superintendent of plant operations and maintenance from Murray Quinn, who retired from the board last month.
Also at last night’s meeting, the board:
•approved a policy on criminal background checks for all board employees;
•agreed to send letters supporting the Ontario Digital Library to the Ontario Library Association and the provincial government;
•heard a report from mathematics curriculum co-ordinator Walter Rogoza on the effectiveness of manipulatives, or props, in helping students to understand math concepts; and
•heard a report from Superintendent of Education Terry Ellwood on “Career Direct,” a program to help identify students at risk of dropping out of school and help them find a “path to success.”
