A reason to get outdoors and get active, while raising money for a good cause, the Alzheimer Society of Kenora-Rainy River Districts is holding its annual “Walk for Memories” fundraiser in both Rainy River and Fort Frances this weekend.
The first walk will take place Saturday in Rainy River, with one to follow here on Sunday.
Everything is set to go, said Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the local Alzheimer Society.
“We’ll walk regardless of the weather,” she noted. “It should be a wonderful time.”
The walk is open to everyone. Participants are encouraged to collect pledges and then walk, run, bike, in-line skate, skateboard, or ride in their wheelchair or stroller, Schonewille explained.
Pledge forms for the walk here are available at various locations around town, including the Civic Centre, or by calling 1-800-682-0245.
A one-night stay at the Delta Winnipeg will go to the participant with the most pledges while all pledged registrants will get a free T-shirt.
Last year’s walk here, which drew 13 participants, raised more than $1,878. The top pledge-getter brought in $365.
Locally, registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Super 8 Motel, with participants then heading over to Fort Frances High School to walk around the track.
And for a tasty treat afterwards, participants will be able to make their own ice cream sundaes.
This is the seventh year the walk will be held in Fort Frances.
As for the walk in Rainy River on Saturday, interested individuals can pick up pledge forms at the Rainy River Record office.
Registration will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Rainy River Legion, followed by the walk around the community (weather permitting).
Last year’s walk in Rainy River raised about $1,365.
In related news, “tag days” for the Alzheimer Society also are planned for Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20, with volunteers being needed.
