Wal-Mart seeking a school to ‘adopt’

The local Wal-Mart is encouraging schools from across the district to enter for a chance to be “adopted” by the store for the upcoming year.
To enter, schools can send in a letter explaining why they should be chosen, including a wish list of things they might need for the children,
“We try to fulfill all wishes,” said Cindy Kellar, a member of Wal-Mart’s charity committee.
Funds for the “Adopt-a-School” program are raised by Wal-Mart staff through public barbecues, in-store barbecues, bake sales, and silent auctions.
One of the largest accomplishments of the local program was building a basketball court at Nestor Falls Public School back in 2008, noted Kellar.
“We’ve been up there a few times since and the kids are having a blast,” she said.
And just this past week, St. Michael’s School here received 10 digital cameras for students to use and learn with.
For the 2010/11 school year, the charity committee also is hoping to become more involved with helping out in the school—such as when they “adopted” Donald Young School in Emo and helped with the cooking at its annual family barbecue, Kellar noted.
Entries can be sent to Wal-Mart (attn: Bonnie Allan) at 1250 King’s Highway, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 2X6.
The deadline for entries is June 14.
