Wal-Mart Canada hands out bursaries

Wal-Mart Canada announced this week the winners of the 2008 Wal-Mart Canada Associate Scholarship. Across the country, a total of $112,000 was awarded to 75 students entering their first year of post-secondary education.
Each applicant was evaluated based on academic achievement, community involvement, extracurricular activities and financial need.
The Wal-Mart Canada Scholarship is available to high school students working for Wal-Mart, or whose guardians work for Wal-Mart, who intend to continue their education at an accredited Canadian college or university immediately following their graduation from high school. Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 and spans one year of post-secondary education.
“Wal-Mart Canada is honoured to reward the hard work of Canadian students and to provide financial assistance for their education and career goals,” said Lina DiDiodato, manager of community involvement for Wal-Mart Canada. “Wal-Mart’s scholarship program demonstrates that by investing in the education of young people, we are investing in the future.”
Marcus Herbert, a pantry associate of the Fort Frances Wal-Mart is honoured to be a Wal-Mart Associate Scholarship recipient.
“It’s a privilege to receive this scholarship and to be recognized for all my hard work throughout my high school career. I look forward to pursuing studies in Honours Bachelor of Science, Chemistry at Lakehead University,” he said.
“Our scholarship program is just one of the benefits that Wal-Mart offers its student employees,” said local store manager, Darryl Skinner. “We are very proud of Marcus and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
