Volunteers thanked for feeding local hungry

It may be difficult to imagine but every week, up to 150 people in Fort Frances depend upon the work of generous volunteers to ensure they have at least one hot meal a day.
That’s why David’s Deli soup kitchen is here. And last Saturday (Nov. 29), the people who work to keep it going were treated to a hot meal themselves at the Joy of Live Fellowship Church on Armit Avenue.
Nearly 70 people turned out to enjoy turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, carrots, and dessert, including outgoing Fort Frances mayor Glenn Witherspoon and his wife, Judy, as well as mayor-elect Dan Onichuk and his daughter, Moreta.
“I want people to know how much the work you do here is appreciated, and I hope it continues over the next year, as well,” Onichuk said.
David’s Deli is open Tuesday to Thursday each week and serves roughly 50 meals each day, said Joy of Life Pastor Sandra McEvoy.
“We couldn’t possibly do it without the generous help of these people,” she remarked.
The evening of thanksgiving began with a prayer by Pastor McEvoy and ended with entertainment by a number of young singers from the district.
There also was an opportunity for guests to make cash contributions to the soup kitchen.
