Having video cameras in downtown Fort Frances would help the OPP solve crimes, Insp. Steve Shouldice told the Police Services Board meeting here Friday morning.
The local detachment commander also said the threat made at the Northern Lights Credit Union here Sept. 12 remains under investigation.
Insp. Shouldice said police have forensic and video evidence which is being looked at.
“This would be helpful to have some cameras in the downtown area,” he remarked.
He noted the cameras would not have to be monitored, but would be useful if police needed footage to solve a crime.
Insp. Shouldice said surveillance at the credit union has provided police with descriptors they can work with.
But if police could go around town getting video from every business, it would aid them in piecing together the movement of suspects and events.
“It’s something to think about,” he hinted to Mayor Roy Avis.
This isn’t the first time the notion of surveillance cameras for Scott Street has come up.
Back in 2005, the Police Services Board recommended the town install a surveillance system in the downtown area.
At the time, its main purpose was to address growing concerns about property damage, violence, noise, public intoxication, and the use of illegal drugs, specifically on the 200 block of Scott Street.
