VALA hosting workshops next week

The Valley Adult Learning Association will be hosting a trio of seminars here next week to promote insight, emotional well-being, and a willingness to change for those interested in attending.
All of them will be led by Carol Fulcher, president of “Vision Quest,” who has been here previously, including last year, to spread her wisdom.
“She’s very experienced, she has a message, and her teaching style is entertaining,” said VALA co-ordinator Barb Duguay. “People will leave having learned something.”^The first of the workshops—entitled “True Colours”—will take place Tuesday, Aug. 12 from 6-9:30 p.m.
at the VALA office at 608 Scott St.
(between North Air Services and Einar’s).
Duguay described this as a selfawareness workshop that will provide those who attend with a single insightful way to understand themselves and others.
People will learn to appreciate their own unique strengths, enhance communication skills, learn how to defuse potential conflict, build tolerance, and increase self-esteem.
“Dealing with Difficult People” is the topic of the seminar slated for Wednesday, Aug. 13, also from 6-9:30 p.m.
“This is about working with anger in a positive way. It should be really interesting for people,” said Duguay, adding it’s perfect for those in management positions or who have to deal extensively with the public sector.
This workshop aims to see people assess their behavioural style and improve listening and communication skills, with the goal to better deal with aggression, resistance, and cynicism in the workplace.
The third workshop—entitled “The Challenge of Change”—will run Thursday, Aug. 14 from 6- 9:30 p.m. It will give attendees an opportunity to look at, and discuss, change from different perspectives, and how to deal with controlled and uncontrolled change.
It aims to lessen anxiety associated with change as well as identify adaptive skills to assist with the rapidly-changing world around us.
The cost for each workshop is $48, and a minimum of eight people is needed for each workshop to be held.
To register or for more information, call Duguay at 274-3553.
The deadline to register is one hour before each workshop begins.
In other VALA news, Duguay said the office will re-open next month to continue to provide skillbuilding assistance to adults.
And for those who want to get involved in the non-profit organization, a tutor training workshop led by Barb Eldridge is slated for October.
