UNFC youth summit starts today

Education, recreation, and culture will be on the agenda for regional teens today through Thursday during the fourth-annual United Native Friendship Centre youth summit here.
Registration began at 3 p.m.
today at the Urban Multi-Purpose Aboriginal Youth Centre (UMAYC) at 616 Mowat Ave., with a mix-’nmingle slated from 3-5 p.m.
A spaghetti supper will follow at 5-6 p.m., with an “icebreaker” session from 7-10 p.m. where summit attendees will introduce themselves.
The conference really gets going tomorrow, with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. followed by an opening ceremony at 9. A nutritional break is slated for 10:30 a.m., with a suicide and depression workshop then running from 11 a.m.-noon.
After the noon lunch break, a Town Youth Participation Strategies (TYPS) workshop will run from 1-2:45 p.m., then resume at 3 p.m. after a 15-minute break.
This will address youth smoking.
An open discussion will follow from 4-5 p.m., followed by a barbecue supper at 5 p.m. at Pither’s Point. The evening will wrap with karaoke, running from 8-10 p.m.
Wednesday also will be a full day, with a breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by a morning ceremony at 9 a.m. An anger management workshop is up next, running from 10:45 a.m. until noon.
After being treated to a chili lunch, three personal accounts on drug and alcohol abuse will take place throughout the afternoon.
Closing remarks will follow at 5 p.m., with supper at 6 p.m.
A dance at the Legion will be held at 8 p.m.
For the last day of the summit, delegates will be treated to breakfast at 8 a.m. A closing ceremony at 9 a.m. will wrap up the event.
Last year’s summit drew about 65 youth from across the region as well as centres as far away as Toronto.
