The United Native Friendship Centre here is asking the public to help it reach out to those hungry in both the traditional sense and the psychological one.
In conjunction with Mental Health Week, the UNFC is holding a fundraising barbecue tomorrow from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at its Portage Avenue location.
Bannock burgers and a pop will be available for $6. Hot dogs will cost $2 each, with a pop costing a loonie extra.
Proceeds will go towards the UNFC’s food bank.
“Due to a lack of funding that we don’t have anymore, the majority of what we do [with the food bank] comes from donations,” said UNFC homelessness outreach worker Tara Henttonen.
“[The fundraiser] is a good way for us to provide for all the clients we serve.”
Henttonen said because of the funding decline, those needing the food bank only can use the local service once every 60 days, when previously it was once every 30 days.
She added the UNFC’s food bank helped roughly 300 people last year.
Several information booths representing various mental health awareness organizations also will be set up at the barbecue.
