Underpass to be closed next week

Staff

The Portage Avenue underpass was reopened to one lane access today, but will be completely shut down to all through traffic, including emergency vehicles, starting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 4) and remaining that way until 4 p.m. on Friday (Aug. 7).
This complete road closure, which will run 24 hours a day for the four days, is necessary to install approximately 45 metres of sanitary sewer line which is located in both the west and east laneways along the south approach.
During this complete closure of the underpass, emergency vehicles will have to use either McIrvine Road or the Victoria Avenue emergency railway crossing to gain access to and from the north end of the community.
Other motorists will have to use McIrvine Road.
The pedestrian walkway will be open at all times, where the new west sidewalk will be utilized.
In related news, the intersection at Scott Street and Portage Avenue will be closed to through traffic starting at noon on Tuesday (Aug. 4) for about one week to complete the installation of pipes there.
Transport trucks will be re-routed up Mowat Avenue, then along Church Street, Veterans Avenue, Sinclair Street, Victoria Avenue, and Front Street.
Temporary wooden barriers, complete with “No Exit” and “Local Traffic Only” sign, will be installed at the intersections of Scott and Mowat and Scott and Victoria to inform motorists of the traffic changes.
The public will be able to access Scott Street from either end, just not be able to pass through the Portage Avenue intersection.
