One new fire was reported yesterday in the Northwest Region, the Ministry of Natural Resources said.
Nipigon Fire #76 was reported Saturday evening and confirmed by early yesterday morning.
This 0.1-hectare blaze, located about 10 km southeast of Longlac, and is now “out.”
Meanwhile, one new fire was confirmed Saturday. Kenora Fire #90, located about 15 km south of there, was a campfire that was left unattended.
It was 0.1 ha in size before FireRangers declared it “out” by day’s end.
In related news, 36 MNR personnel, including eight FireRanger crews and incident management staff for planning, logistics, aerial operations, and liaison, have arrived in British Columbia to join the firefighting effort.
Equipment also is being shipped.
As the season progresses, some crew members are reaching the end of their seasonal contracts and many are heading back to college and university programs.
As they depart, the remaining personnel are consolidated into crews, ready for initial attack on new fires and action on existing fires as needed.
The number of active fires gradually has been dwindling, with a total of 49 as of today.
Most of these are long-burning fires located in the northern part of the region. There are no active fires here in Fort Frances District.
The fire hazard is “low” to “moderate” across most of the region, with some pockets of “high.”
Still, there has been a rise in human-caused fires in the region, including campfires that have been left burning.
