Two of the five gas stations in Fort Frances–Witherspoon’s One Stop and Sunset Shell–are up for sale.
Citing retirement as the reason, both Mayor Glenn Witherspoon, owner of Witherspoon’s One Stop, and the Gustafson family, who own Sunset Shell, hope to get out of the business altogether.
“You hit a time in your lives, career, where it’s time to change the pace–do something else and take a break,” said Mayor Witherspoon.
Sunset Shell, co-owned by Greg Gustafson along with his wife and parents, has been on the market since the fall of 1999 after his parents, who manage the station, decided to retire.
“They want to retire. We started out with a five-year plan and that came and went a year-and-a-half ago,” said Gustafson.
Although he also owns the Great Bear gas station on Highway 11 east of town, Gustafson will not take over the station here in town when his parents retire.
“It’s too involved and too complicated to just hire a manager or something like that,” he said.
