Two new fires occurred in the West Fire Region over what otherwise was a quiet weekend.
Fort Frances Fire #10 was located near Quetico Park and reported at 0.1 hectares in size. The blaze was extinguished Saturday by a FireRanger crew from the Fort Frances fire management headquarters.
Meanwhile, Nipigon Fire #12 was reported in the far north of Nipigon District yesterday afternoon. The blaze was reported at 10 ha. in size and will receive a monitored fire response.
It and four other fires are being managed to realize ecological benefits associated with forest fires as per Ontario’s Forest Fire Management Strategy, as well as the approved fire management and response plans for these areas.
Since the fire season began April 1, the region has seen a total of 96 fires to date, consuming 349 ha.
FireRangers are busy assisting with municipal and district work projects, including the clean-up of storm-damaged and hazard trees. They also have been assisting at a number of Ontario’s parks.
Between work assignments, FireRangers are focused on training and proficiency exercises—ensuring their skills, readiness, and equipment is at a level that will enable them to respond quickly and efficiently to fire line deployment.
Under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, day burning of brush or grass is not allowed.
Burning of brush or grass should be done no sooner than two hours before sunset and it must be put it out no later than two hours after sunrise.
Choose a safe site, keep your fire small, and never leave it unattended. Always remember to ensure the fire is put dead out before leaving the site.
If you live in a municipality, check local bylaws for any burning restrictions that may apply.
