The Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service was called to two fires at the lime kiln in the local mill over the weekend.
Around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, firefighters responded to an incident involving components of the rooftop above the lime kiln.
Firefighters remained on the scene until about 9 p.m. to provide any necessary suppression for contractors who were contacted to remove damaged sections of the rooftop.
A second incident then was reported around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, which firefighters attended until 9:30 a.m.
This latter incident was a fire on the main level in the storage/maintenance shop under the lime kiln.
The fire was quickly extinguished and investigation into the cause of both fire occurrences has determined that these fires were a result of pyrolysis of wood components present (exposure to heat over period of time to point where combustibles begin to smoulder and reach ignition temperature).
In both incidents, the cause of the fires has been determined to be accidental.
The scene was turned over to AbitibiBowater at 9 a.m. Sunday upon completion of overhaul and investigation.
