In what might seem to be a story for the tabloids, a kitten with two faces was born here last week—although it only survived for a few days.
The birth of the kitten was a “twist of fate, I guess,” said Fort Frances resident Tyler Doerksen, whose cat gave birth to the kitten on May 16 around 8 p.m.
Doerksen said he was just holding the kitten while sitting on his bed when he noticed it had a second face.
“I dropped it on the bed and jumped back 10 feet,” he recalled.
“I went up to it again slowly and there he was—all one-and-a-half of him.”
Altogether, the kitten had two ears, four eyes and three noses—one was partially developed, the other two fully developed.
One jaw was fully formed, but had an underbite. The other jaw was half-developed.
“Everything else [was] normal,” Doerksen said about the kitten, which he had nicknamed “Twofer.”
The cat seeming healthy—its mother had accepted it, it could meow, and even had a little more pep than its three littermates.
Videos Doerksen took show it stumbling around like kittens do.
A visit to the vet had been planned for Friday so the kitten could be examined, and more could be learned about him.
Sadly, “Twofer” passed away the evening before.
The litter’s three other kittens were “clearly normal—not a flaw to them,” noted Doerksen, with one of these being identical to “Twofer,” minus the extra parts.
