An Ontario man has been fined a total of $1,700 for keeping live snapping turtles in his home.
Donald Cameron of Fort Frances was charged $700 for illegally keeping wild game and $1,000 for obstructing a conservation officer.
The court heard that on Feb. 13, 2011, conservation officers conducted a search of Cameron’s residence based on information they received about live snapping turtles in the home.
While Cameron denied having the turtles, the officers found two snapping turtles hidden in the tank of a toilet.
Cameron said he hid the turtles in the toilet tank when he saw the conservation officers approaching his residence.
Cameron was convicted of a similar offence in 2010.
