Rainy River District School Board trustees will be getting an update on the status of Fort High’s cafeteria at tonight’s monthly meeting, which takes place tonight at 7 p.m. at Rainy River High School.
After no tenders were submitted to the board for catering the cafeteria earlier this year, students in the school’s hospitality program have taken over providing meals at lunchtime.
As outlined in the memo to trustees from Superintendent of Education Casey Slack, students received Safe Food Handling Practices training and the program started up in mid-September.
Upwards of 125 students are eating lunch in the cafeteria, with an average of 33 students purchasing meals there.
Meals are purchased through a $4 per meal pre-paid plan. Plans also are underway to offer a soup-and-wrap meal for $2.
All meals conform to the provincial healthy food and nutrition legislation.
Slack noted in the memo that all unsold meals are distributed through the Learning Support Centre of the Alternative Education Department.
As well, the Fort High principal has reported he has not received any complaints so far from the parenting community.
The issue of transportation also will come up at tonight’s meeting as the board’s transportation committee puts forward two resolutions.
The first is that the RRDSB give approval to move towards an unincorporated transportation consortium.
The second motion would be to approve a Joint Ad Hoc Transportation Committee between the public board and Northwest Catholic District School Board for the development of a joint transportation policy.
Also tonight, the board will be receiving a report on the results from provincial EQAO testing.
As well, it will present two recognitions of excellence at the meeting.
The first will be an employee recognition presented by Diane Ross while the second one will be for Rainy River High School’s “Outdoor Activities Course.”
