Truck driving class returns

For the first time in two years, the Fort Frances campus of Confederation College is offering an AZ licence truck driving class.
The first class will wrap up at the end of this week, but another is scheduled to be offered beginning in May, campus manager Anne Renaud said.
“There’s been a lot of demand for it,” Renaud said of the reason the college is offering the course after a two-year break.
“There’s a lot of jobs in that field.”
The college has its own transport truck it uses to teach the students.
The current class is being taught by a female instructor, and three of the four students also are female, “which is pretty unusual, I think,” Renaud noted.
The course runs for four weeks, with students also receiving WHMIS training and some first aid in addition to their AZ licence.
The maximum class size is four students, so each one can get driving time and time with the instructor.
“They get lots of one-on-one time,” Renaud stressed, adding students do their final road test in Kenora this week.
Anyone interested in taking the course in May should look into registering as soon as possible.
“They need to apply early because they need a medical,” Renaud noted.
Because of the current doctor shortage in Fort Frances, some students have had to travel to Thunder Bay for the medical.
For those who qualify as low-income earners, Renaud said there’s a bursary to help cover the cost of tuition.
