There’s a new movement afoot to bring the word of God to people across Canada—and it’s using a rather unique approach.
Spread the Word Theatre Ministries and Wycliffe Bible Translators currently are on tour with an original theatrical production entitled “Sunong: The Right to Machatan.”
It’s a story about two Canadian missionaries who encounter a gifted young Buddhist scholar while trying to translate the Bible into the language of a group of people living in a remote corner of Southeast Asia.
The 12-member cast hails from all across North America and is accompanied by a stage and kitchen crew who assemble and strike the sets as well as prepare the dinner, which is part of the evening.
The tour began in Saskatchewan last week and it will be coming to Borderland for one performance at the Couchiching Bingo Palace next Thursday (Sept. 18).
This is not your average dinner theatre, the producers said. For starters, the meal will feature an authentic Asian dish, consisting of Kai Kang Dang (curried chicken with coconut milk), complete with chop sticks, topped with a dessert of lime or mango cheesecake squares.
The project is part of a greater mission called Vision 2025—an ambitious attempt by Wycliffe to translate the Bible into the nearly 3,000 languages spoken by more than 250 million people worldwide who have never seen the scriptures in their own language.
Spread the Word Theatre Ministries is the vehicle by which the funds are raised and volunteers recruited.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the curtain goes up at 6:30 p.m., with a break for dinner at intermission.
Admission is free, but you reserve your place ahead of time so organizers can plan for the meal.
