Town residents can put their Christmas trees out this Saturday (Jan. 14) when the Fort Frances Fire Brigade makes the rounds for its annual pick-up.
As in the past, the tree pick-up is being held on the first Saturday following Ukrainian Christmas, which fell this past weekend.
The crews of firefighters will begin making their rounds sometime around 2 p.m.
Usually, four or five teams divide the town into sectors and each go to separate neighourhoods.
“We are once again asking that trees be placed on the boulevards, easily seen, and not covered in snow,” Capt. Wayne Riches told the Times.
“Trees located in alleys will not be picked up,” he added.
Trees also should be lying on their side so there’s no confusion as to whether it is for pick-up or if it’s planted in a front yard.
The trees likely will be chipped this year by Daryl Eyolfson of Daryl’s Custom Landscapes Ltd.
Once again, those who have their trees picked up are encouraged to give a donation to the fire department (do not attach donations to the trees).
As in the past, the brigade will top up the donations and give it to a good cause.
This has ranged from local charities to area families in need.
The Christmas tree pick-up—a tradition started here years ago by the now-defunct Jaycees—not only is a community service but also a fire safety measure.
After all, having a dried-out tree in a residence can be a fire hazard.
