The grand opening for the NCDS Transition Centre will be held tomorrow (April 30) from 5-7 p.m.
It is located at 242 Scott St. in downtown Fort Frances to allow easy access for prospective clients.
The grand opening will give the public and invited guests the opportunity to learn exactly what the Transition Centre can provide to the residents of Rainy River District.
We are pleased the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has awarded this new program of Workforce Literacy and Essential Skills program—one of 33 in Ontario—to NCDS.
Our program is designed to assist unemployed/laid-off workers, under-employed and employed workers, as well as those working on their apprenticeships to acquire the essential skills necessary to compete in a knowledge-based global economy.
NCDS is very happy to bring to the Fort Frances area a brand new initiative. The Transition Centre was created and tailored for our local employment needs.
In February, NCDS was awarded a $403,000 contract by the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities to improve local accessibility and training focusing on the needs of employers and individuals who wish to improve workplace and essential skills.
The program is directly in line with the ministry’s vision of establishing “the most-educated people and highly-skilled workforce in North America.”
More than two dozen representatives from employers, stakeholder agencies, and government agencies throughout Rainy River District, as well as participants from Dryden, Kenora, and Thunder Bay, attended the Rainy River regional planning meeting held by NCDS last July.
Information gathered at this meeting identified the need for workshops and training available both during the day and the evening.
The necessity for extended hours was paramount in everyone’s mind and, of course, being free was even better!
The NCDS Transition Centre has been able to fulfil that need through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
The new pilot program is designed to help anyone facing obstacles in the workplace.
This includes people struggling with computer use, having difficulty completing apprenticeship paperwork, and those wishing to acquire new job skills in order to move up the promotional ladder or start out on a new career.
The Transition Centre is open from 9 a.m.–9 p.m. so all those wishing to upgrade computer skills, writing skills, math skills, and many more have the access to this free training they need to meet their schedules.
